Shepherding Square
  • Purpose
    Players must not let an opponent get past them and tackle their teammate. This aerobically intense drill makes a player repeatedly responsible for shepherding their teammate from an opponent, while the teammate uses evasive skills to get away from trouble.

  • 3 of the 6 players in a group start inside the square, (A) has the ball, (B) is designated to protect (A), (C) is the designated tackler
  • (B) must prevent (C) from tackling (A) by obstructing with body and arms
    (B) must have their back to (C), with arms spread out
    (C) must not give away a free-kick to get past (B)
  • (C) attempts to tackle (A), who moves within the confines of the square to avoid (C)
  • If (C) gets past (B) they should lay a fair tackle on (A), at which time players are substituted for the resting players.
    Resting players should stay involved with encouragement
  • Players change roles on their next turn.
