Triangle Front and Square
  • Purpose
    Players must remain switched on, always thinking about where to best position themself to receive a handball or pickup a crumb. This drill makes players aware they need to run to be front and square of the next contest.

  • Form two lines on each of the 3 points of a triangle, 'front and square' players (D) and (E) start inside the triangle.
  • Pair (A) run the ball with handball and kick long to leading pair (B), whilst player (D) makes position front and square to them
  • One of the pair (B) marks and handballs forward to (D), whilst the other runs hard and eventually receives from (D)
    The marking player must run to assist his partner with a feigned shepherd and instructive voice after handballing to (D)
    After handballing, (D) must run to be front and square of (A) for the next contest
  • (B) receiver runs their distance, bouncing if required, then kicks to pair (C), whilst player (E) makes position front and square of them
  • One of the pair (C) marks and handballs forward to (E), whilst the other runs hard and eventually receives from (E)
    The marking player must run to assist his partner with a feigned shepherd and instructive voice after handballing to (E)
    After handballing, (E) must run to be front and square of (B) for the next contest
  • (C) receiver runs their distance, bouncing if required, then kicks to pair (A), whilst player (D) makes position front and square of them
  • Substitute players (D) and (E) every few minutes
