DRILL
Switch to Overlap 2 v 1
  • Purpose
It cannot be understated the importance switching the play to find space to run and carry. This drill presents a common game scenario, a kick-out where a player is free in the pocket. The action must then switch back across goal to work the ball up the other side of the ground.

  • Assign 3 defenders, one at full-forward (E) who starts 10m from goalsquare, one at (D), one at (F).
  • Full-back (A) kicks to loose player (B) in the pocket. (E) runs across to stand the mark. Seeing nothing up-field, (B) decides to switch, as there is a 2 v 1 in the opposite pocket.
  • (B) can either play-on across goal, or kick to (A or C) who are both making leads. Defender (D) must cover both of these options, and defender (E) can chase (B).
This is obviously a risky kick, so make sure it hits the target.
  • (A, B & C) should be able to use run and carry down the fat side to get free and kick to leading (F).
    (F)'s defender attempts to spoil.
  • Once the kick is delivered to (F) or defenders make a turnover, players move to the next cone in sequence. You can optionally keep the same leading forward at (F), so only rotate between (A, B & C). Rotate defenders after several minutes.
