DRILL
Shuttle Run Stop Kick
  • Purpose
A form of evasion is for players to stop suddenly, but this often requires the player to quickly deliver a kick as they won't have time to regain momentum. This drill makes players run hard, then forces them to concentrate on balancing before kicking so they hit the target.

  • Split into pairs, each pair has a footy and 2 cones. Pair put their cones on the boundary 5m apart and leaving a 1m gap from the next pair. The third cone is setup 20m infield level with the middle of the 2 outer cones.
  • Player (A) starts with the ball and sprints shuttle runs between the 2 cones.
  • After a few sprints the coach blows the whistle. (A) must quickly stop, take a split second to balance themself, then deliver a kick to (B).
  • Wait for any errant kicks to be fetched and the balls to be returned to (A), then blow the whistle signifying (A) starting shuttle runs again. Repeat this process until (A) has kicked 5 times.
  • Swap (A) and (B) and repeat. Each player can repeat as kicker a couple of times.
