Shadow Kicking
  • Purpose
    Players must learn to steadying and hit a leading target when running at pace, even if there is an opponent chasing at close range. This drill helps build an awareness of how quickly the ball must be put onto the boot, and delivering the ball accurately when hot.

  • Chaser (B) starts 5m behind (A), 70m between stations (A) and C)
  • (A) runs with the ball while (B) gives chase. (A) must steady and kick to leading (C) before being tagged by (B)
    If the player giving chase reaches the kicker, they make give a light push, but tackling is not allowed
    If the kick sits up and the chaser can spoil, spoil at low intensity
  • (C) marks and continues running while (D) chases. (C) must steady and kick to leading (A) before being tagged by (D)
  • After giving chase, players join the line of leading players at the other end; after kicking join the chasing line
