DRILL
Multi-effort Square
  • Purpose
Players must make more than one effort when the ball is in their area, however some players have a tendancy to be lazy and stop after one effort. This drill makes players recover quickly, simulating the sustained intensity required in a game situation, plus they practice goakicking when tired from their effort.

  • Set out a 10m square on the 50m arc, (B) and (D) start holding tackle bags, (C)(E) and (F) start holding footballs
  • (A) runs into the square, receives a handball from coach (F) before returning a handball to (F)
following each completed action, coach (F) must exchange a 1-2 handball with (A)
  • (A) runs to (B) and tackles the bag, bringing it to the ground, then recovers quickly for a 1-2 handball with (F)
Person holding the bag allows (A) to take down just the bag, not them as well
  • (A) runs and smothers a kick by player (C), then recovers quickly for a 1-2 handball with (F)
Player (C) should kick with low intensity
    (A) must be desperate and dive with arms outstreched over the kicker's boot
  • (A) runs to (D) and tackles the bag, bringing it to the ground, then recovers quickly for a 1-2 handball with (F)
  • (A) runs, jump and punches away a high handball from (E), then turns quickly for a 1-2 handball with (F)
  • (F) gives (A) a second handball after the 1-2 (effectively a 1-2-3 handball), and (A) runs in and kicks at goal
  • (A) retrieves the ball for the coach, while the next player runs into the square
  • Makes sure any players at stations (B) to (E) are substituted every so often
