DRILL
Marking Contest 1-on-1
  • Purpose
It's very handy having smaller players in the team who are strong overhead and can take a mark up forward. This drill pits players of similar stature against one another in a marking contest to improve marking ability.

    Opp Strip

  • Coach (C) stands 15m away from players who have paired up with someone of a similar size
  • Coach (C) kicks or handballs high in the air to the first pair (A) and (B)
  • (A) and (B) jostle for position, with the player who makes front position attempting to mark, the other attempting to spoil
  • If the ball is spoiled, you may elect to end the contest, or have players compete for the crumb
  • Once ball is returned to (C), next pair begin
  • After a while of even contests, call the players in and explain that players now take turns to lead and spoil. Lengthen the distance to 25m. The leading player must push-off their opponent and coach (C) kicks to their lead, while the other player attempts to spoil.
