  • Purpose
With the advantage of a loose man, players need to make correct decisions about whether to shepherd or peel off the defender and be the next handball option. This drill practices a 3-on-2 situation where players must use effective teamwork to defeat their outnumbered opponents.

  • Groups of 3 v 2 at each end of the ground, and on each wing.
  • Coach kicks the ball to station (A) where the 3 attackers must work the ball towards station (B) using handball or kicking.
There is no 'marking', if someone marks they must immediately play on
The teammates without the ball must either provide a shepherd for the ball carrier, or run away from the red opponent to become a kick/handball option
  • If the opposition manages an effective tackle or causes a scrimmage, that group ends and the coach restarts with a second ball, kicking to the next group in sequence.
  • Otherwise the trio in possession must work the ball until one is within kicking range of station (B). They then kick high to the next 3 players to contest.
Once the ball is kicked to the next group of 3 v 2, that ends the invovement of that group - they don't join the next group's contest
Players must all return to their starting cone before the next contest
  • After 5 laps:-
Two attackers swap with two defenders (these 4 players remain at the same station).
Remaining attacker shuffles around one station to mix things up.
Repeat under everyone has a turn defending
  • Variation: Rather than the attacking team kick to a fellow attacker at the next station, instead they kick the ball high to the cone to make a marking contest.
    Changes the focus from a possession game.to a 50-50
This variation will provide more contested ball
