DRILL
Backdoor Infield from a Stoppage
  • Purpose
At stoppages, defenders prefer to stand between the throw-ins/ups and the goal, to avoid a tap forward into space. This can be overcome by moving the ball backwards and infield to a running player, centralising the attack and thereby increasing the area a forward to lead into.

  • Team (A) has seven attackers (including a ruckman) near the wing and 2 leading forwards in the goalsquare; Team (B) has three defenders (including a ruckman) near the wing and 2 defending the leading forwards in the goalsquare
  • Coach performs a boundary throw-in, 80m from goal, opposing ruckmen attempt to find their rovers
Ruckman for attacking team (A) should tap to the defensive side
Defenders from team (B) start on their own defensive side, and should try to stop the attacking team''s progress by tackling, smothering or bumping
  • Attacking team (A) should use quick handball, first backwards, then infield to release a kicker
Players should all stay involved by blocking opponents and using instructive voice
  • The player from team (A) who was released looks forward to see who is the best leading option, then kicks to that player
This will be the player who is easiest to kick to and/or has got away from their opponent and/or will have the best angle when shooting
  • If a player marks they may take a set shot, otherwise play continues until a goal is scored
  • If a scrimmage forms near the wing, the ball should be thrown-up, otherwise the drill ends
  • Substitute the attacking team with any spare players, and after a few turns substitute the defending players on the wing
