DRILL
9 v 6 from Defence
  • Purpose
Uneven-sided games are great for a number of reasons. One side has a clear edge in numbers, allowing them to practice skills under moderate - but not 100% - pressure. Coaches can optionally introduce additional defenders to make things progressively harder for the team in possession.

  • Two teams, (A) has 9 players who spread out in a line behind the kick-off line, (B) have 6 players who start outside the 50m arc.
  • Coach kicks a ball to any player from (A) to start. As soon as the ball is kicked, (B)'s run inside 50 to apply pressure
Kick to central players to begin with, then wider players in consecutive turns
  • (A)'s work the ball with run and carry, by hand or foot, past the 6 defenders. Normal match conditions apply.
(A)'s should be looking to use runners to cut open the defence by drawing opponents and creating the overlap
If there is nobody ahead, look to stop and switch play
  • (A) continues until they get the ball to an assistant / injured player on a cone at around centre half forward.
(B)'s are not allowed within 5m of the person on the cone.
  • Jog back to position to have a breather, then repeat. Rotate the 6 defenders after 2 or 3 turns.
  • Progression (optional): Increase the intensity and difficulty for team (A) by adding 1 or 2 additional defenders.
