DRILL
3-on-3-on-3
  • Purpose
Second, third and fourth efforts must be made by players when the ball is in their area. These efforts can be chasing, tackling, running to provide a handball option or applying a shepherd. This drill requires players maintain an enormous workrate to run to defend, then run forward to score, as scoring is difficult.

  • Choose 3 teams of 3 players, give teams the same (or close) coloured tops, and allocate them one of the sets of cones 2m apart as their goal. First 9 players stand anywhere inside the triangle.
  • Coach kicks the ball to a contest in the triangle. Each team of three is competing against the other 6 players, trying to kick or handball through their goal.
Normal football rules apply, if a mark is taken, nobody can tackle
Teams without the ball defend by tackling and blocking attacking players and covering their goal
  • The team with possession moves the ball forward with running handball, or kicking to a lead. If within range of their goal, they take a shot.
A goal can be scored by a handball.
If the shot misses, play continues.
To count as a goal, the ball must travel through the cones from inside the triangle, not from behind the cones
  • The exercise continues until one of the teams scores a goal, then rotate the 9 players.
Coach needs to ball up in case of a scrimmage.
Assistant coaches stand behind cones as goal umpires
